Symi

Symi - Your Gateway to the Aegean Sea.

Colorful face of the Aegean: Symi Island

Symi, located just opposite Datca and Bozburun Peninsula of Turkey is one of the most unique Greek islands with its colorful neoclassical houses, tranquil beaches, and magnificent atmosphere. It's an ideal destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful and romantic holiday.

A Touch of History

According to Greek mythology, the island takes its name from the sea nymph Syme, the wife of the sea god Poseidon. Although there is limited information about Symi's history before the 14th century, archaeological remains on the island indicate continuous settlement. The island, which remained under the rule of the Romans, Byzantines, and the Knights of St. John, passed into Ottoman rule in 1522 and was known as Sömbeki during the Ottoman period. After joining Greece in 1948, Symi reflects the influences of various civilizations.

Let's Explore the Beauty of the Island

Symi has two main settlements: Gialos and Chorio. Gialos starts from the port and extends to the foothills of the surrounding hills, while Chorio is the upper part of Symi and stands out with its narrow streets and traditional structure. Between these two settlements, you'll find the famous stairs of Symi, known as Kali Strata. In Gialos, you can see the Clock Tower, made by the famous sculptor Valsamis. Another work of Valsamis, the Fisherman Statue of Mihalaki, stands on the rock in the harbor, welcoming visitors. The Monument of the Unknown Soldier in the harbor is another prominent structure in the area. Pedi Bay, near the center, is an ideal address for those who want to enjoy the sea. Agia Marina Beach, within walking distance from Pedi, is one of the famous beaches on the island. Agios Nicholas Beach near Pedi is another address to enjoy the magnificent sea. One of the most visited places by visitors to Symi is Panormitis Bay. The Archangel Michael Monastery located in this bay is still inhabited by priests and is the most famous and magnificent structure on the island. This monastery, with its Byzantine frescoes and carved icons, is the most important place of worship on the island. You can also swim at Marathounda Beach near the monastery.

Finally, we recommend the small Symi shrimp for seafood lovers and the souvenirs of colorful sponges and figurines of colorful houses for those looking for a special island memory.
