The Island of the Sun: Rhodes

Rhodes, the central and largest of the 12 Islands (Dodecanese), is one of the Greek island preferred by millions of tourists each year with its stunning natural beauty, well-preserved medieval city, and vast beaches.

A Touch of History

Rhodes, which has attracted the attention of powerful empires throughout history, has been the land ruled by different civilizations such as the Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights of Rhodes/Malta, Romans, Ottomans, and Italians. Rhodes is also known as the land of the sun god Helios in Greek mythology. The Rhodes Statue, believed to have been built in honor of the Sun God Helios and standing at a height of 32 meters, which has not reached us today, is among the seven wonders of the world. Today, at the site of the Rhodes statue, there are deer statues positioned on two columns on the right and left.

Let's Explore the Beauties of Rhodes

When your passenger ferry docks at Port of Rhodes, unlike other Greek islands, you will be greeted by the castle walls stretching along the coast. Rhodes city is generally divided into two parts: the Old Town and the New Town. Rhodes Castle surrounded by massive walls and the Old Town emerge as historical structures where you can feel the Middle Ages. These medieval military architectures, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, were built by the Knights of St. John. The Hippocrates Square with a fountain in the middle and cafes around it, the Street of the Knights, which is the most famous and visited place on the island, the Palace of the Grand Masters used by the Knights of St. John as an administrative center, the Süleymaniye Mosque with its pink walls at the end of Sokrates Street, the Rhodes Archaeological Museum where you can witness history closely, and the windmills located in Mandraki Port are just a few of the magnificent structures you can see when you step foot on the island. With its white houses, narrow streets, wonderful beaches, and historical structures, Lindos is one of the most special places on the island. The most important archaeological structure of Lindos is the Lindos Acropolis, which includes the castle located at the top of the village, namely the Lindos Ancient City. At the top of the Acropolis, there is also the Temple of Athena Lindia. You can either walk to the ancient city or choose a different option and travel on the backs of donkeys. Another heavily visited place on the island is the famous Butterfly Valley located in the village of Theologos. You can visit this natural wonder where streams and waterfalls flow amidst lush greenery and witness the natural lives of colorful butterflies. Finally, like on every Greek island, you can find delicious seafood and olive oil dishes here. For those who want to try local flavors, we recommend trying Pita Bread, Moussaka, which we can call Greek-style moussaka, Greek Salad, known as Greek Salad, and Tzatziki, which is a thicker version of tzatziki in our country.
