Leros

Leros - Your Gateway to the Aegean Sea.

Leros: Where History Meets Tranquility

Located across from Bodrum Yalikavak and Didim, is a pristine Greek island with its stunning bays along indented coastlines and historical remnants. The island's authentic atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and magnificent views are incredibly appealing.

A Touch of History

Leros has a rich history due to its strategic geographical location in the Aegean Sea. Traces of the island's first settlements date back to around the 4th century BCE. In Greek mythology, Leros is known as the island of Artemis, daughter of Zeus. As one of the 12 islands, Leros, along with others, came under Ottoman rule, and during the Ottoman period, the island was referred to as İleryoz.

Exploring the Beauties of Leros The majority of the population on Leros resides in Platanos, Aghia Marina, Panteli, and Lakki. Platanos, the island's center, stands out with its souvenir shops, restaurants serving fresh seafood, neatly lined cute houses resembling postcards, and a small square with a plane tree, starting from the seaside and extending up the hill. Approximately 500 meters from Platanos Square is Aghia Marina, the island's second port. Here, you can see the ruins of the ancient city and enjoy the sea at its beautiful beaches. To the south of Platanos is Panteli, a small fishing village known for its sandy beaches and lined windmills.

Places to Visit

Though originally separate settlements, Platanos, Panteli, and Aghia Marina are now connected with houses built in between and are within walking distance of each other. Leros Castle, also known as Panteli / Panagia Castle (Virgin Mary), located atop a hill, is another must-see landmark with its impressive historical significance and breathtaking views.

Another significant location on the island is Lakki, where the central port is located. Lakki boasts the largest and deepest natural harbor in the Eastern Mediterranean. The traditional neoclassical houses of Italian architecture in Lakki draw attention. The War Museum located here is also an important site to visit.

The Church of Aghios Isidoros, built on a small islet near Gourna in the Kokali region, is one of the island's significant symbols, connected to the coast by a narrow road and attracting tourists' interest.

Finally, for those who want to fully enjoy the sea, let's share that the most popular beaches in Leros are Gourna Beach, Vromolithos Beach, Blefouti Beach, and Dyo Lisgaria Beach.
