Explore Chios: Where Ancient Charms and Mastic Delights Await

Located just across from Cesme, Chios, also known as Sakiz (mastic) in Turkish, is the fifth largest island in Greece in terms of area. Named after the mastic trees, this island is the sole producer of mastic resin in the world. With its magnificent beaches, houses adorned with Genoese-era ksista (sculptures), and fragrant mastic resin, this island has the power to captivate your heart.

A Touch of History

The international name of the island is Chios. Known as the homeland of individuals who achieved significant success in the fields of art and literature from ancient times to the present day. Poet Homer, the creator of the Iliad and the Odyssey, historian Theopompus, and mathematician Hippocrates, famous for his contributions to geometry, are just a few examples. Throughout history, Chios, ruled by various civilizations such as Ancient Greece, Persia, Rome, Byzantium, Genoa, and the Ottoman Empire, stands out with its impressive historical structures and museums.

Let's Explore the Beauties of the Island

When you take the ferries from Cesme, you will reach the island's center, Chios. Chios, both the most populous and the administrative, cultural, and commercial center of the island, is also known as Hora. The foundations of the Chios Castle, built during the Byzantine period, the Melek Pasha Fountain from the Ottoman era, the Mecidiye Mosque commissioned by Sultan Abdulmecid, Vounakiou Square, and the Public Garden (Dimotikos Kipos) are among the must-see places in the city. The windmills, one of the island's most important symbols, are located just 1.5 km away from the center.

In the village of Armolia, located 20 km away from the center, you can learn about ceramic making and craftsmanship while witnessing the production stages. You can also enjoy the mastic gardens in this village, where mastic production takes place.

Pyrgi Village, named after the castle located in the village square, is a place where you will admire its architecture with houses built like castles and ksista (sculptures).

Olympi Village, where a solid wall was built from houses to protect the mastic trees and the people from pirates, is similar in architecture to Pigri and Mesta villages. You can wander through the narrow streets that stretch like a maze and visit the Olympi Cave, consisting of stalactites and stalagmites, located 8 km south of the village.

Mesta Village is the best-preserved medieval village on the island. Unlike other castle villages, this village has a pentagonal plan, with only two gates to enter the village. You can visit the New Taxiarchon Church, one of the largest churches in Greece, and feel the history among the narrow streets and stone houses.

For those who want to enjoy the sea, Karfas Beach, a water sports center, Mavra Volia Beach covered with volcanic black stones, and Komi Beach with facilities where you can have fun all day are just a few of the magnificent options.

Finally, do not end your trip without tasting the delicious seafood of the island, cold coffee Frappe, which you can find all year round, and mastic-flavored products.
